W.H.Good ltd, or ‘Goods of Kilkenny’ as it is known was founded in 1927 by William Henry Good, who first opened a small shoe shop at no. 90 High Street. Later he purchased some adjacent space and began to retail women’s clothing and from there more space was added over the years eventually expanding into Men’s and Children’s Clothing as well as Linens and Soft Furnishings.
His son, Vivian Good joined the business and so began a further period of growth and development. The existing buildings were extended upwards and the business expanded to become a department store.
In 1977 an ambitious 4,000sq ft basement was dug to house the expanding Ladies, Men’s and Children’s shoe departments. This addition increased the stores retail space to 20,000 sq ft consolidating ‘Goods’ position as Kilkenny’s leading Department store.
In the early 1990’s the second floor was extended and a lift was added to service the four floors.
In 2004 Goods underwent a major refurbishment and refocusing program which saw the whole store being refitted and modernised as well as the addition of top International fashion brands. The store now focuses on fashion, cosmetics, footwear and accessories for stylish women of all ages.
The face of Kilkenny’s leading department store has changed much since 1927 but the cornerstones of quality, service and style have remained the solid foundation of Goods’ success.
